Holding Pattern: The Late Night Wine Bar That’s Got Us All Caught in Shock and Awe

It’s a Thursday night and you’ve just gotten off of work. You don’t want to go home, but you don’t want dive bar, night club chaos either. You want Bar 58_ & Bistro. Past the enticing racks of 58 Degrees and Holding Co. one finds the coo of beautiful wines, small plates, large plates, and “sweet endings.” The wine bar harkens back to the elegance and allure of London wine bars, classic wood paneling and the glow of abstract art. The dÈcor in the wine bar presents a cohesive take on living room lounge—complete with buttery leather couches, mod-cubist coffee tables, and clean lined table lamps. The wine bar avoids couture discomfort and instead indulges loungers’ yearnings, both epicurean and aesthetic.
Bar 58_ & Bistro offers fifty eight wines by the glass and over five hundred bottles of wine. If one prefers, one of the knowledgeable servers can assemble a flight (at about 2 ounce pours) from those fifty eight wines by the glass. The offerings on the small plates menu include a Charcuterie plate with Speck, and Fra’Mani Salami, a Brussels Sprout Salad tossed in warm bacon dressing, a 4 Cheese Macaroni garnished with parmesan bread crumbs and truffle oil, Steamed Prince Edward Mussels in a fennel, tomato and vermouth broth, and an Artisanal Cheese Plate. The small plates range from $5 to $16. The Artisanal Cheese Plate ($16) lives up to its price offering generous portions of several to-die-for cheeses, roasted nuts and apricot-fig chutney. A few notable larger plates include a $9(!) Angus Burger on an asiago and blue cheese bun with garlic aioli and shaved sweet onion, Butternut Squash Ravioli with Mascarpone and Goat Cheese in a Brown Butter Sauce, and the Mascarpone and Leek Risotto Cakes with a cherry tomato, white wine and butter sauce. The large plates range from $9 to $16, similar to that of the small plates, but more aimed at the individual diner than sharing with others.
Bar 58_ & Bistro offers a lovely selection of ‘Sweet Endings.’ Any savvy diner will tell you, the perfect accompaniment for any red wine is a bold chocolate plate. Bar 58_ & Bistro offers a chocolate plate complete with cocoa covered almonds, Pot du CrËme au Chocolate and three squares of artisan chocolate bliss.
