Healthy Living Celebrates Autumn with Style!

Soil Born Farms Annual Fundraiser, The Autumnal Equinox Celebration, allows youth and adults to rediscover and participate in a system of food production and distribution that promotes healthy living, nurtures the environment and brings people together to share the simple pleasures of living life in harmony with nature. They are committed to developing programming focused on organic food production, healthy food education and food access for all residents.
In their secret organic garden in the city, The 6th Annual Fundraiser is a promoting healthy living, while teaching young adults about agriculture and the environment. All proceeds from this event benefited the Soil Born Farm Urban Agriculture Project. If this event’s cause wasn’t attractive enough, the live music from local bands - bluesy, country meets classical –prefect for the event, A-list restaurants and local celebrity chef sightings were worth the drive over to their Hurley Ave garden in the middle of the city. As a veteran of many food and wine events, this one was excellent! Not only was the food in abundance, complimentary water and honest tea to accompany the multiple wine tasting booths strewn throughout the garden, and ample seating at multiple decorated tables among the fruit trees and haystacks to sit and enjoy the fodder and libations!
But the best part of the event was by far the exceptional quality of food available, and as a diehard food this event has made room on my calendar indefinitely. The vendors included The Waterboy who served roasted vegetables, creamed polenta, and fork-tender braised pork; the Healthy Kitchen catering company who served organic chicken breast with pesto, and grilled steak; Tapa the World who served sweet potato vegetable casserole; The L Wine Bar who served crostini with goat cheese and vegetable compote and my favorite by far was Magpie catering who was far and away the foodie show stopper festival wide. Magpie was serving winter Squash guacamole served with pita crisps and deserts galore including a cookie buffet, with specialties such as Lavender shortbread (exceptional), Spanish wedding cookies, Chocolate orange crinkles, Walnut fudge and much more!
After all of the food and wine we ended the event European style in the cheese and fruit area sponsored by Sacramento Food Co-op serving heirloom apples and pears that paired perfectly with the cheese from Pedrozo Dairy, and the Bella Bru bread accompanied by Apollo Olive Oil. With so much good food and wine it was hard to say good night but no worries, I’ll defiantly be back next year!
