Haunting and beautiful, this performance leaves the audience in tears. Dissimilar from the movie and book versions of this epic tale, we see more of a full circle in the musical of Celie’s life. New to the Sacramento Community Theater, brought by our own California Musical Theater, The Color Purple blow’s the crowd away. By strange circumstance, I have never had the change to view the movie or read the book myself, but knew a great deal about what the musical would involve from all those around me. This tale presented by Oprah Winfery, in similar style to everything that she does keeps you thinking and feeling far after the performance is over. In the beginning of this performance, the content was so harsh that it almost had myself crying in the first ½ hour, but as Celie’s story unfolds there is an equal measure of laughter along with the tears. The situational humor brought by the characters of Sofia played by the hilarious Felicia P. Fields tells it like it is, giving hope to our heroine. The role of Shug Avery, played by Angela Robinson perfectly depicts the sensuous and generous nature of her character. But the most mind-blowing of the performances came from Jeannette Bayardelle who recreated the character of Celie, initially quiet and submissive as her role mandates in the beginning of her performance, she took off in the second act as her story more fully unfolds. From her relationship with Shug Avery to her strength of notes in "I'm Here" this performance has been one of the best I have ever seen at the Community Center Theater. So from novices to experts on this show it’s a must see. For more information on tickets for The Color Purple check out http://www.californiamusicaltheatre.com/index.cfm?page=929475.
