Last night's latest dinning foray was in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco at a local neighborhood restaurant called Spruce. This was a taste experience for the "New Americana" cuisine that San Francisco has to offer. The event was hosted by Black Box Wines. Now at first mention I thought this sounded like another one of the many "prestigious" wine labels, until I discovered, it was literally wine in a black box! and great wine at that!

Constellation Wines, Black Box's parent company have pressed forth with a new production technique, putting quality (abet young drinking) wines into a box format! The smaller than expected box actually holds (4) 750ml bottles, with an environmental carbon footprint that the other wineries can't even touch! From a Riesling to 2 different Chardonnays, a Shiraz, and a Cabernet Sauvignon they have alot to offer, and if that wasn't enough to impress an environmentally conscious wine-drinker they have something for the snobs as well. All of these wines come from appellations as well, not just some random California region of unknown origin.

And on to the table offerings!
Beets and goat's cheese is a classic pairing done here with pears and walnut vinaigrette, this course was a classic, paired beautifully with the Sauvignon Blanc that had a very strong gooseberry nose. The second course was a Roasted Halibut with Fennel and Chanterelles, this one was light, savory and paired with two different Chardonnays one from Napa Valley with a more vegetative and oak quality and the other from Monteray with more citrus notes and a lighter nose.

Our meat course was a grilled bevette steak with chard and duck fat roasted potatoes, this course was by far my favorite! Paired off with a Cabernet Sauvgnion the sweet yet complex notes were balanced perfectly with the fattiness of the meat and potatoes course.

Our cheese course offered 4 different choices, from a blue to a Wisconsin cheddar paired beautifully with cherries and black pepper. Because of the notes within this course the wine pairing of the Shiraz was in harmony with the meal, and a great ending to a tasting sample.

A finial ending to a great meal, coconut meringues with ginger fruit gems!

a great end to a great meal, more insight to San Francisco foodie style, and a great treat to drink some of the Black Box Wine's - Box wine has never looked so good!
