Spring Awakening was nothing of what I originally thought it would be. When I first saw the information on the play I thought that it was a little overzealous to call the "newest" love story, but then there were the Tony awards and use of the musical score in TV spots, so I became more interested. So going in with low-expectations and having my date bail on me hours before the performance, I was looking at going to a love story, ALONE! Snore.
I couldn't have been more WRONG!
The story had many themes, the least of which was a love story, now don't get me wrong, the love story is the underlying thread that keeps the ball rolling, but this German placed - old style musical, set with contemporary music was anything but a single note. This story embraced many coming- of- age themes like puberty, failure, suicide, rape, child abuse, first love, sadism, masochism, and an overall question in authority! With musical collaboration with Duncan Sheik, this was full of rock filled themes, and age old truths. The best part about this musical isn't even the show, it's the courage that it took Artistic Director at California Music Theater to bring something so riskay to Sacramento. Now for all that we are a theater following crowd its an older generation that can still even afford to buy tickets in these bad economic times, and engages a crowd more accustomed to Oklahoma than Rent. Spring Awakening embraces sexuality, and social norms that are not of a Normal Rockwell painting, so BRAVO, and lets hope Sacramento's theater culture will continue to progress as it has, and be even more in the future. Check out Spring Awakening on ti's short run asap it's outta town by Nov 15th!
