The Cloak and Dagger World of Pie

Ever try to find a really great piece of pie in Sacramento? You can just taste it, you know exactly what kind you want, and all you need to do is find a place, right? But there's nothing to be found!
I love Pie.
I know it sounds like a simple statement, but if you've ever had great pie you understand this feeling. It got me thinking as the holiday season is coming up, what options do we Sacramentens have in the way of pie? More than you think if you know where to look.
Two names come to mind that make GREAT Sacramento Pie.
1) The Real Pie Company, and 2) Bennett's Baking Company

Now there may be other really great resources for pie, and if you know of any in Sacramento or the outlying area, PLEASE let me know, as I'm an avid pie fan. But until I can find better these are my faves.

Kira O'Donnnell's, The Real Pie Company is like Netflix, it's the pie you want when you can't have it, but when you get it your really excited from all the built up anticipation. I first found out about this amazing pie treasure hunt from SacMag's March article, "Real Pie Company Makes a Comeback." At first I got on the pie list just because I'm a huge fan of Kira O'Donnell's writing for Sacramento Magazine, and when I first met her she was shocked that anyone would have remembered her writing! This astounds me as she's a great writer, and after trying her pies, I can she where she get's her creative experience!

So back to the Pie, my first orientation to her pies, was with her Banana Cream Pie, you never forget for "firsts' for soo many things, and your first "Kira Pie" will be one of these as well. Now I'm a fan of Frank Fat's Banana Cream and this beat the pant's off that one. It's all about the crust, nutty, crumbly, honey-sweet, and BUTTER. Then there's the simple and sweet (but not overpowering) butterscotch filling. It's techinically billed as - " Butterscotch banana cream pie A consistent best seller, this yummy pie offers a house-made walnut cookie crust, creamy, subtle butterscotch pudding and a pile of sliced bananas, all topped with a big dollop of freshly whipped cream." Who wouldn't love that? The following is a photo that doesn't do it justice.

I'm a huge cream pie fan, pecan pie fan, and all the others...but really love cream pies, and Kira does them especially well. Another one to love is the Coconut Cream Pie. But how do you find these elusive pies?

Following the Journey to Pie
  1. You can seek out this pie quest your self by emailing Kira to get on the list at kiraodonnell@yahoo.com
  2. Once she confirms your email, she'll add you to her growing list-serve of announcements about pie
  3. Now the pie timings can be a bit sporadic, remember she does have a life, but it's worth the wait
  4. Once you've emailed in your pie request of the week you receive a number where you can go to the given location (Corti Brothers Market), and get your pie at the given time (almost always after 2pm)
  5. Now, you have your mission, but if you find yourself growing late in the day and can't make it to the given location that given day, CALL Cort Bother's, otherwise they will give your Pie AWAY! (usually not until the following day, and you might run the risk of losing your status on the pie list)
Now, you can go forth and Conquer!

Corti Brothers Market
5810 Folsom Boulevard
Sacramento, CA 95819

The pies cost $18 to $20 and are available for pickup at Corti after 2 p.m. Friday.

Now if your like me, and you have a pie on order, but it's just too long to wait till Friday, then check out another great pie choice. Bennett's Pies. I came across these when they used to have a wholesale baking location in River Park (my ma's neck of the woods). They have a SOLID carrot cake, perfect ratio of fruit/nuts/carrot, and there pastries are sold at some of the best coffeeshops in town. (At last check there scones, cookies, and pastries were at Chocolate Fish Coffee, Naked Coffee Lounge, and Tupelo Coffee). But they also have wonderful pies. ALL BUTTER crust pies. French apple, apple, cherry, marionberry (a little tart for my taste), and more. So here's the inside track on where you can find them:
  1. Taylor's Market and Kitchen have slices, $3-4
  2. Corti Borther's has whole pies for $14-15
  3. SaveMart on Folsom Bvld (ONLY this location) has them for $10.99
Now I'm all about supporting local business, but that's a great deal on pie! They're all delivered around the same time, so it's not like our cheaper alternative is older, just more affordable! But if you have a special occasion, everyone from our family hit's them up directly, for orders (you don't have to order, bulk to order wholesale quality)

Bennett's Bread & Pastries
2530 Tesla Way, Sacramento, CA, 95825-1912 (916) 481-3349

And PLEASE let me know if you all come across any MUST HAVE pie finds!
