15 Semi-Trailers for sound stage, all dressed in red & white brought Radio City Music Hall's Rockettes to Sacramento! This last Wedensday the Rockettes went out to dance for the country for Christmas, on a national 35-city tour. Right as the curtains went up all draped in red, the crowds started buzzing, and they were off, first the legs, then the whole row of dancers came out to give the crowd what they were waiting for.
With a cheesy Santa, cheering up the crowd and the dancers as rain-deers in glowing antlers the show began. The sound stage and set up were one of the most spectacular parts about the show, from LED Projection Screens giving a history of the Rockettes and their time with Radio City Music Hall. From Santa's magic floor entrance, to the panels the 50+ Santa's came out of for the dancing Santa's number, this is a well thought out show.
A personal favorite part of the show was the nutcracker number all danced with large fluffy bears and dolls. These costumes must have weighted a ton, and must have been awfully cumbersome, but they danced light as air in toe shoes, and made a number that might have been reserved for children, light-hearted playful and whimsical-fun.
Another crowd pleaser was the precision Toy Solider number, which has been apart of the Christmas spectacular for as long as it has run. But knowing the crowd has changed since the 1920's when the Rockettes started there was a lot of new dance styles thought-out the whole show, including zubma and hip hop in addition to the wealth of the classic leg lifts.
The show ended with a nativity scene, and the three wise men bringing their gifts, which then erupted in a singing sensation with snowflakes, and streamers shooting out on mass to the front row crowds that were covered by the end of the performance. Aside from feeling it was slightly akin to a Christian rock concert at the end, it was a wonderful show and makes the watcher fully understand why the Rockettes have been around for over 76 years.
