Given the change to experience a preview menu of Kupros offerings for Dine Downtown was a wonderful experience and changed many a false impression I had. The menu (available below, and and at Dine Downtown) got me excited about what they were putting out and that was before we even got there.
Baby Lettuce
Poached Pears, Maytag Blue, Walnuts, Red Wine Vinaigrette

It's mouthwatering as you can see, so my expectations were high, and were equally met with Chef Matthew Robinson's food. The best part of tasting dinners, and taking your friends, is that you get a chance to try two dinners instead of just one, thus getting an even better impression of what the restaurant has to offer.
First Course
To start out the menu we wanted to try the Lost Abbey Carnevale Saison, although not apart of the Dine Downtown package, it went perfectly with our salads, and started the evening off wonderfully. It's a true testament to their beer offerings, it's crisp tart, and has a bit of a sharp sour final note.Baby Lettuce
Poached Pears, Maytag Blue, Walnuts, Red Wine Vinaigrette
The poached pears made this dish for me, you could taste the aromatics of the poaching broth. Paired with the Maytag blue this was a great palette starter.
Casale Farms Beets
Roasted Red and Gold Beets, Chevre, Apple, Arugula, Sherry Vinaigrette
I love the earthiness of the red and golden beets showcased here, the tart apple, and the creamy goat cheese with the sweet sherry vinaigrette - a great combination
Fish Du Jour
We started with the Otto in a Kumquat chutney. This was a very dense fish (akin to sword fish) and was served atop a sunchoke (a.k.a Jerusalem artichokes) & potato croquet, further topped with braised mustard greens with garlic. The fish was a bit dense for my taste but was perfectly complimented by the subtly sweet chutney. But the piece de resistance was the croquet. It was fried in duck fat, and had incredible flavor - crispy, creamy, savory, herbal, and the braised mustard greens cooked with slivers of garlic, like a scene straight out of GoodFellas! A wonderful dish, that was well complimented by the complimentary house white wine.
Third Course
A selection of gelatos to choose from.
Chocolate, Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta, and the favorite of the table - Porter (yeah, the beer) gelato with chocolate covered pretzel bits. The gelatos were all creamy and savory, but the last one was really unique and thus the first one gone, even though it was on the bottom.

And what's a great dinner
without after dinner drinks to follow?
Now although this wasn't part of the pre-fix dinner menu, we couldn't help ourselves so we tried the Cilantro Cucumber Cocktail and the Kupros Manhattan.
The first was a bit sweet for my palette, but a well thought out concept for a drink. Muddled cilantro, gin, a bit of simple syrup, and house made sweet & sour, finished with cucumber.
The Manhattan was made with (one of my favorites) Sazarac Rye, sweet vermouth, and a maraschino cherry. A great take on an old classic, that will hopefully keep the norm on cocktail menus.
Dine Downtown offers such a unique opportunity to try some Sacramento favorites for a package cost, and see what everyone is talking about! From restaurants you've wanted to try for years, to the great new place that you keep hearing about - this is your chance to embrace the Sacramento restaurant scene!

Second Course
This was a hard choice, and the preferences fell to our server (if your server is passionate about his job, trust their choices, they eat this food all the time, they usually know what their talking about).Fish Du Jour

Coq Au Vin
Red Wine Chicken, Lardons, Pearl onions, Mushrooms, Parsnip Potato Puree
If your looking for something that will bring the feel of Julia Child's cooking, this will hit the mark any day of the week. It's a restaurant take on the home-style dish, and well executed at that. You can taste the lushness pork flavor from the Lardons. The red wine infused into all the vegetables that have stewed with the chicken, and the Parsnip Potato's are the perfect bite.
