Sugar & Spice Does Everything Nice!

A new bakery to the Akali Flats area in Downtown Sacramento has been making every day a little sweeter. From taking the time to filigree a cake by hand at the last minute, to inventing a twist on french pastries Carissa Jones, Proprietor and Executive Pastry Chef, makes it happen.

From starting the morning at 4 a.m. she bakes throughout the day so there is always something fresh. When I first got the craving to try Sugar & Spice it was after an early dinner and really was looking for something special and unique for a sweet treat.

Immediately remembering all of the grand opening coverage about this new found treasure I called to see if the were still open, it was 7 minuets till close and it was Carissa Jones herself answering the phone, and said "Come on over, we'll be here."

We got there and dashed in, (I hate making people in the industry have a harder time getting home than closing up a shop already is) but Carissa was all about relaxed, sweet excitement and we were able to get all of our desired sweets and then some, as well as a wealth of knowledge about pastry.

Apprenticing her staff along with her, and gauging their dedication in their efforts, takes a page out of the Patrick Mulvaney Empire-making playbook. She very much cares about what she's putting on the plate or pastry stand, and is making sure those around her are just as dedicated.

Starting off herself at the Culinary Institute of America and then working at legendary establishments like Fair Oak's Slocum House she's been in the Northern California Culinary scene for awhile. Winning accolades like the 2010 Brides Choice Awards and more, this lady is all about her pastry skills.

Currently, hours are from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., but Jones said they could change as business levels dictate. But if your looking for that incredible sweet treat that you can't find anywhere else, maybe something you tried in Europe or saw on Barefoot Contessa then call Carissa, she's always inventive and is looking to make special orders if they can be imagined.

Orders of $30 or more from people within eight blocks of the store can have their goods delivered for $5 by bike from Light Speed, a messenger service Jones is partnering with. Orders can be phoned in to the bakery at (916) 952-5253.
