Mexican Independence Day & Food Truck Gathering!

Want to embrace an Independence Day celebration and take in all of Sacramento's Food Trucks? This was recently an experience I was able to partake in at the Capitol's west steps where all the foodies, and celebrating gathered. So my initial impression of how great Sacramento's food truck scene were quite a bit different at SacToMoFo than I encountered at this gathering.

While at SacToMoFo the waits were horrible, it was really hot - but some of the food was fantastic. My bar for a really good food truck is the steamed buns at the Chairman Bao truck, this was not quite the same food bar. Not having really tried any food from the Sacramento food trucks (except at catering events - where it isn't really fair to judge a restaurants/ food trucks quality) and I took that into account when I went to visit these. With so many options I wanted to try, especially some of the "BIG" names like Drewskis and MiniBurger truck, and the newly famous Wicked Witch...well here's how my initial impressions found them

The line at Wicked witch was really long, and with only 4 menu options (only 2 of which were sandwiches) this one was a come-back...so on to another line for Drewskis (thankfully none of these lines were anything like SacToMoFo) right when we stepped up to the truck there were wafting smells of Rosemary and Garlic.

Originally we were just sandwich bound so we could conserve tummy space - but the smell of their "Delicious Tots" was too much to lose, so we not went after their "Hemi" - which is a grilled cheese sandwich with double cheese, Carolina Pulled Pork, 3 cheese mac n' cheese, caramelized onions, then grilled on Sweet French, but also the tots.

Verdict: so-so, I've heard a lot about this sandwich so I expected more, but I felt like the sandwich was trying to achieve way too much - I couldn't taste any of the yummness of the mac and cheese so it became filler for me, the Carolina pulled pork was good, but so sauced that I couldn't taste any pork flavors, the cheese was all texture and those amazing tots that we smelled, they were cold in the center and crispy on the outside.

For $3 I would have preferred less of the large mass of tots we received and more (cooked) and well seasoned tots (making the flavor match the wonderful smell that drew us in).  I think they have interesting options, but more isn't always better sometimes it's just more, so a great grilled cheese with concentrated flavors would have much more wow factor...in truth they are overly complicated panini's...it would be cooler to have a custom "make your own" order option for kids that just wanted real grilled cheese.

A true newbie, and quite an excitement for me was the VolksWaffle (Food Cart) - the waffles were made with hand-made dough created from pearl sugar and can be dressed with whipped cream, strawberries and or just plain powdered sugar (my personal fav) better than the best Belgian waffle! This was a great find, I was also quite interested in the MiniBurger truck but the lines made it not worth the wait (although the Ninga Burger looks good, I'm still feeling it's worth checking out).

Fat Face's Popsicle's are always yummy (strawberry coconut shown), but one of the coolest things at this gathering was all the food carts on the street (soo many) and the sliced mango on a stick topped with chili pepper - sounded soo good, but we were more than full at this point. Another luxurious treat was the sweet corn on a stick, slathered in mayo, topped in Queso and finished with chili pepper - I couldn't get around the idea of that much mayo so I didn't partake but WOW did they smell wonderful! Has anyone ever tried either of those? I'm soooo curious to find out what they taste like!!
