Freeport Bar and Grill is a nice short drive from South Sacramento, down Hwy 160. Along the river, the small picturesque town of Freeport is host to Freeport Bar and Grill. Upon entering the front door we were welcomed by the smiling and cheerful Landeros family whom has been running the establishment for years. Don’t be fooled by the old oak bar just steps through the doorway, this is not your traditional bar. The décor of the main dining area will make you feel as if you were the mountains in a lodge instead of just across the levee road with its oak accents, green tables and chairs, and the main focal point being a large wood burning rock fireplace. Weather permitting, don’t forget about the rather spacious patio seating they have available where you can dine to the soothing sounds of the four tiered fountain on display.
With so many house specialties to choose from on the menu, we started our dining experience with the cioppino. The traditional fresh white fish, shrimp, mussels, and crab with a Freeport Bar and Grill twist: served over linguini. This was actually a pleasant change from the traditional rice. Our first entrée sampling was another one of their house favorites, the rotisserie chicken. They are slow cooking rotisserie chickens all day and night long in the visible rotisserie between the bar and kitchen entrance and are available as Old Fashion Style or California Style. The Old Fashion Style is the traditional herb roasted flavor with garlic mashed potatoes and a cornbread dressing. As the menu proclaims, they are some of the best garlic mashed potatoes in town. The California Style is served up with caramelized onions, artichoke hearts, green olives, and locally grown asparagus tips. Whatever choice, the meat was incredibly moist and the spice rub, a family secret, added just enough crust to the outside but incredible flavor throughout. Our next sampling was the St. Louis Style Ribs, which are some of the best in the area and one of the best selling items. The meat was so tender that it fell of the bone but the key to the dish is their secret homemade barbeque sauce. To finish our meal we were served a temptation known as Banana Fantasy. This mesmerizing collaboration of bananas, caramel, Gunther's Coconut Ice Cream, chocolate sauce and toasted almonds is not to be missed and a great way to finish your Freeport Bar and Grill experience. And don’t forget, since it is a bar as well, they have a full bar to wash your meal down.
When looking for a place to eat out of the ordinary downtown/midtown Sacramento jaunts, be sure to check out the Freeport Bar and Grill. The portions at this mom and pop joint are proud and plentiful, overwhelming the most hungry of eaters and leaving most with doggie bags. The Freeport Bar and Grill also boasts a warm and welcoming service that is an expected experience in such a Pleasantville-style town. So if you're looking for good ribs, craving something sweet or just a cold drink in a comfortable place take a drive down to Freeport Bar and Grill at 8259 Freeport Blvd Sacramento, CA 95832 or (916) 665-1169 or visit them at www.freeportbarandgrill.com.
