Upon entering what most would think is a traditional mall eatery, one would not expect such good food, service, and diverse selection. River City Brewing Co. is one of many eateries in Sacramento's Downtown Plaza. While have heard of The Hard Rock Café, which sits at the front entrance to the mall, a better kept secret is River City Brewing Co. With less commercial style food, it rests on the opposite end of the complex. Upon entering the brewery, we were welcomed with the hustle and bustle of the atmosphere. The industrial feel of the décor, from the open ceilings to the exposed venting system, gives an open and inviting feeling. However, the main attraction to the décor are the large beer vats behind the floor to ceiling glass windows just beyond the bar area.
Offering a wide variety of brewed libations and a full bar, as well as an impressive wine selection; the wait staff is also quite attune with paring advice aplenty. The food, which varies from simple offerings, such as their exceptional onion rings or their Blue Oil and Fries are a great way to start your dining experience. For the main course, we started with the Crispy Eggplant Napoleon which has three crispy rounds layered with goat cheese, basil pesto, and sun dried tomato tapenade, served on red pepper coulis and garnished with a crispy basil leaf. The flavors of the goat cheese and tapenade made the dish quite a crowd pleaser. Next came my personal favorite of the night, a delicious Rosemary Garlic Marinated Portobello Mushroom Pizza with Cambazola cheese, spinach, caramelized onions, sundried tomatoes with a garlic cream sauce. The garlic cream sauce is what really wraps up this dish and tantalizes your pallet since it is not too rich and brings just the right amount of garlic taste to accentuate the other ingredients. To finish these yummy post-shopping, pre-movie dishes we enjoyed the caramel gelato. I have sampled many a gelato’s in my days, as gelato is still one of my all time favorite after dinner deserts, but this was by far one of the best.
As for the libations, since this is a brewery, we had to sample some of their signature and seasonal brews that they have to offer. We started off with the K Street Kolsch which paired quite nicely with our Eggplant dish. The Kolsch is very light ale brewed in the style of cologne Germany, with a crisp, citrus finish. This brew is a definite must for most drinkers looking to venture outside the box of your traditional Budweiser or Coors lovers. As for the brew that we enjoyed with the pizza, we were told by our very knowledgeable server that we could not go wrong with the Woodenhead Ale. Let me tell you, she was couldn’t be more exact. The Woodenhead Ale is big amber ale brewed with 3 new varieties of American hops and aged on oak thus making it a liquid celebration of the hop. The robust taste from the hops paired quite nicely with the Portobello mushrooms and Cambazola cheese on the pizza. However, you must be careful with this one because it packs a pretty mean punch with its 6.7% alcohol content.
So whether in the mall shopping around, or as a destination spot this brewery and more offers much to the downtowns culinary options.
