“Whistle Down the Wind” has begun its sixteen-show run with the Community Theater as a part of the 2007-2008 Broadway Sacramento Season. Andrew Lloyd Webber based his 1996 musical, with lyrics written by Jim Steinman, on the 1961 film of the same name. The plot involves three Louisianan children finding a haggard man in their barn. The children mistake the man for Jesus amidst the rest of the town’s frantic search for an escaped convict. Drama ensues and the children and The Man are forced into struggles with growth, morality and honesty. The music has a certain rock meets gospel and blues quality distinct to Jim Steinman, whose arranging skills have assisted both Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler. Bill Kenwright directs this current tour of “Whistle Down the Wind” with a hybridized cast of traveling actors and local musicians and actors. The show delivers striking performances from the female lead Swallow, played by Andrea Ross, and The Man, played by Eric Kunze. The set design impresses beyond end, and would be the perfect selection for theater-loving children over the age of twelve. “Whistle Down the Wind” will run for sixteen performances (ending November 11, 2007) with tickets ranging from $65 to $15, subject to the date and time of performance, and location.
