The crowd virtually hummed with anticipation as the opening night of Riverdance was upon us. For those who had yet to see this performance of Irish cultural tradition live, the California Musical Theater brought us quite a treat. Rumored to be the final farewell tour of this dancing and musical troupe over ten years in the making.
As the curtain went up, and the stage-setting monologue begins, the music tunes and the show is on. Divided into two acts, the beginnings of this Celtic show are traditional in nature. Following the traditional start including the presentation of the dancers and the infusion of Spanish tradition with a fiery Flamenco dancer, the show then cuts away in the second act to showcase the bridge over to America. This crossover of the Irish people in song style and dance including the rich and melodious tones of a baritone singer and a dance-off between two different styles of tapping, those of New York and of Dublin in a competition that engages the entire audience.
Although no longer a part of the show, the influence of Michael Flatley's choreography and style are still evident in all aspects of Riverdance.
