The scene is a night club in Berlin, as the 1920's are drawing to a close. In a dark background the Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience to the show and assures them that, whatever their troubles, they will forget them at the Cabaret. From Nov 14- Dec 13 Roseville's Magic Circle Theater recently brought a come hither version of a classic to Sacramento's surrounding areas starring one of the wonders of the local theater scene Lindsay Grimes as the mysterious and charming Sally Bowles originally portrayed by Ms. Liza Minnelli in 1972. Unlike it's predecessor this version was strong in highs and lows as the performance went on. Starting with the engaging and surprising master of ceremonies hilariously engaged by David Garrison, a high school student no less! Garrison, accompanied by the Kit Kat Girls whose performance which included singing and dancing ranged from amusing (Two Ladies) to lackluster (Sitting Pretty), but despite the average footwork of these dancing mavens, David Garrison's performance constantly stunned and brought the crowd roaring with laughter. On the opposite side of this story is the drama of Sally Bowles and Cliff Bradshaw, much like the performance in 1972 Lindsay Grime's depiction of Sally Bowles is at times charming, sad, and haunting. Lindsay Grimes, quickly becoming a standard in lead roles for Sacramento theater, delivers as usual, an enthralling performance! One of the most surprising moments of the entire performance was the attrition of patrons, accustomed to theater in playhouses the world over it always shocks me to the core to see individuals get up mid performance and leave the show! Such an appalling lack of decorum is dis-hearting but never unexpected in suburbs! Ironically this show, which depending on the directors artistic license, can be quite racy! was very tame, but the main breath-muttered insult was due to the fancy pants and mild sexual innuendo! This show is always a crowd pleaser, and for those that stayed for the performance, the acclaim ranged from "the best show I've seen in years" to "Thank God they brought something edger than Our Town to Roseville." I totally agree, the time spent was worth the highs and lows of the show--- and if were lucky Roseville will continue to become a mecca for theater goers!
