From the moment we stepped through the entrance at Cesar Chavez Park this Saturday it was a good time to be had by all! Unlike the normal Sacramento stifling heat that engulfs us by mid May it seems that climate change has been to our benefit this last month, for the time being, and made a great event all the more enjoyable - NO one wants to drink red wine in 105 degree heat! But enough about the weather, from young to old the crowd tipped near the anticipated 5,000 attendees. The lines were much more approachable this year than in years past, and the Grange Restaurant's line as always was down the block. But from Gekkeikan Sake to Brew it Up, Mulvaney's B&L chocolate covered cream cheese strawberries and Crush 29's pork tenderloin lollipops with sweet potato puree the food was great, and plentiful. Highlights of the evening included the Ludy's BBQ pork sliders, Klinker Brick's Syrah, the shirts the boys at Fat Cat Scones were wearing (Sconer, haha), and the Grandpere that Renwood was pouring.
As the drinking wears on a girl after 2 1/2 hours in the sun we watched a bit of the competition and saw Noah Zonca of The Kitchen Restaurant get beat by Adam Pechal of Tuli Bistro! I was right surprised, as The Kitchen has the reputation of the best restaurant in Sacramento (that was about 10 years ago though). Right as we were heading out reigning chef winner Ame Harrington from L Wine Lounge & Urban Kitchen was going head-to-head against Darrell Madeira of Crush 29 - I've got to say I'm biased and as a downtowner hope Ame won! But as the heat was getting to me I headed out early to hydrate, so if anyone knows how the final showdown when down please let me know!
