Grape Escape 2011: A Rain or Shine Affair

What a soggy day for the main event, did you get the memo? It's supposed to be June! But somehow the rain just kept coming down, soaking out so many events scheduled to be going on Saturday - so after a long day at work I wasn't looking forward to slipping around in the rain, so it was quite surprising right as the clock hit 4pm that the sun started coming out, only leaving a particularly muddy Caesar Chavez Park in it's wake.

Far from a gloomy mood, there was an air of childhood style rainy day excitement, no doubt because of the alcohol involved, but despite the overall excitement there were quite a few vendors not in attendance, causing the vendors that did show up to be out of food quite quickly.

From the blue cheese beignets with a cherry glaze put out by Mulvaney's B&L, to the huge lines for Pizza Rock's meatballs and red sauce (haha misleading much). The Tuli Bistro's mobile pizza oven line was even worse, it brought back flashbacks of SacToMoFo in a bad way. But the Raley's booth was nicely covered and they were grilling up veggies, pouring sangria's, and keeping the public happy!

But the main event was on the stage, where Suleka Sun-Lindley of Thai Basil competed against Adam Pechal from Tuli Bistro and Russell Okubo from Fat's Family Restaurants faced off with David English of The Press Bistro and Bar. Hilarity and excitement ensued with secret ingredients like whiskey and pork belly, with Mark S. Allen at the helm MC'ing the event details.

This was particularly hilarious when Allen was so excited to get details from the judges like SacBee's Wine writer Chris Macias, that before had a plate set in front of him/ much less take a bite, there was a mike in his face, "First impressions please!" really? It was like a bad episode of Iron Chef (the local edition). Either way good, if slightly damp, times were had by all - but the breaking of multiple glasses from kicking up winds harked the time to go, and it's looking forward to another year from here on out.
