Of the many events I have gone to, from wine and dining to fundraising charity functions this is by far the best one yet, which is no little amount of praise. The Old Sugar Mill, in Clarksburg California is off the beaten path, although a beautiful drive along the river, which takes you to a once brick sugar mill, now wine tasting house.
Once inside this now historic building we were greeted by the benefits of this great fundraiser, the people of InAlliance – an organization that provides job assistance to more than 200 adults with disabilities living in Sacramento, Yolo, and El Dorado County. After receiving our complimentary tasting glass and tasting bracelets it was on to the main event, while listening to a wonderful harpist and perusing showcased studio art we also visited the interior wine rooms including the wonderful Todd Taylor and French Hill wines, as well as barrel tasting for futures from Heringer Estates.
Once outside in the courtyard that is the setting for many a wedding for a reason, we then walked the maze of vendors comprising: massage – Mellow me out day spa, cider – Fox Tail cider, beer – Hoppy Brewing co, restaurants – Masons, Hanger 17 bar and grill, Tuli Bistro, JR’s Texas west BBQ, Hawks, Kru Sushi, California Café, Chocolatires, additional live music, artist donated pieces, and also including: Whole foods, It’s a grind coffee house, Rominger West wine, Peltier Station wines, Michael David Wines, and that’s just a sampling of the offerings.
From linen tablecloths to white tents the décor was all in classic, fresh, summer taste, and aside from the fabulous food and drink the starting bell began on the competition itself – 2008 Celebrity Chef Challenge. The competitors included Jim Turknett from The Sterling Hotel, Clay Purcell from The Tower Bridge Bistro, Thomas Daly from The Sequoia Restaurant, Michael Fagnoni from Hawks, Billy Ngo from Kru, John Gurnee from Mason’s, Adam Pechal from Tuli Bistro, and Carolyn Kumpe from East Bay Restaurant Supply.
With an invigorating contest that this humble observer doesn’t know who won to this day, the event was a smashing success. Not only benefiting a great cause but with full portions, full pours, and even barrels full of soda and water for the dehydrating guests. The Celebrity Chef Challenge is a must-go on my list in the future ‘til the drinks and fun run dry.
