Sweeny, Sweeny Todd- the Demon Barber of Fleet Street!

The music circus is at it again bringing awe inspiring shows to Sacramento. Housed in the Wells Fargo Pavilion downtown, it is tents no longer for these summer shows. Already showcased were the talented shows of Sound of Music, Gypsy and now Sweeny Todd. The run times are short (Sweeny Todd- July 22 – 27) do to the nature of all the shows that the California Musical Theater brings to Sacramento’s summer audiences. With the intimate theater-in-the round style of Shakespeare Globe Theater in London, we get a better performance than I’ve even witnessed at the community center theater. The acoustics, the lighting and sound could not be beat. With actors coming in from behind you, singing next to you, and dying in front of you this theater transport you within the show. The haunting, witty and eerie show of a bitter mass-murder in Sweeny Todd was expertly depicted in this most recent rendition. From the retching passion portrayed by Mark Jacoby and the hilarious commentary provided as Mrs. Lovett played by Mary Gordon Murray this blood chilling tale is not to be missed. Upcoming shows are Swing from July 29 - August 3, My Fair Lady August 5 – 10, Evita August 12 – 17 and Hairspray August 19 – 28.
